![]() ![]() “The Caterpillar” is unique in the sense that it differs from your typical horror story. “The Human Chair” in particular, has received plenty of praise from fans, and readers in their chairs might feel goose bumps all over while reading. The stories are creepy and nicely crafted, with a few that stand out. They are mostly short, which makes them great entertaining little stories even for those who lack the time and focus to read. The stories are not as macabre as some of Poe’s works, so those with a weak stomach, take heart. If you enjoy the horror works by the legendary Edgar Allan Poe, this collection featuring nine of Edogawa Rampo’s best short stories, described as the author’s homage to Poe, may well give you your horror fix. Disco Frito by Richard Elman7/5/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() I explained what I wanted and he said he thought he could probably answer my question as he was the foreign minister.Ĭosta Rica is no longer as relaxed as all that, but it is more so than almost any place else in Central America. A gent in a guayabera was seated behind a desk, going over some papers. I knocked on one official-looking door and was told to enter. Once, when I needed information from the Foreign Ministry, I was able to wander about for some minutes, unimpeded, in the corridors of the principal old government building in the capital, San Jose'. A hospital we visited in Liberia, which cared for Nicaraguan wounded, was clean, well maintained, staffed by numerous attentive young nurses and doctors. Lush green mountaintops were terraced with coffee bushes under fluffy cloud covers. Whenever we crossed the border into Costa Rica's Guanacaste province, schoolchildren in the small villages along the Pan American Highway were neatly dressed in blue, seemingly scrubbed and well fed farmhouses had roofs, and walls, and concrete floors, and livestock. My first memories of Costa Rica come from the late '70s, when it was a refuge from the war in Nicaragua, which I was covering as a journalist. ![]() Seven pillars of wisdom book7/4/2023 ![]() ![]() "The heat of Arabia came out like a drawn sword and struck us speechless."
